Effects of water-retaining agent (Sky Gel) ongrowth, yield and water use efficiency of Wheat (Triticumaestivum L.)

Abstract

f 1

Inadequate water supply is one of the major problems facing the arid and semiarid

regions of the world, causing a marked decrease in land productivity. Bearing this in mind and recognizing that huge areas of the world are arid or covered by sand. This study was performed during the winter seasons of 2011 -2012 at the farms of AL-QaamResearch Station, AL-Anbar province 420km western of Baghdad, Iraq. The purpose was to investigate the influence of hydrogel polymer (Sky Gel) on growth, yield and water use efficiency of wheat.

Before starting the field experiments a laboratory experiment was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of a hydrogel (Sky Gel) soil conditioner on the physical properties of field soil(sandy loam soil) subjected to wetting and drying cycles(0 and 14 cycle). The treatments involving different concentrations of Sky Gel  were imposed in soil before planting  of wheat. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design . wheat variety was Tumos 3  and four treatments of Sky Gel  in four replications. The treatments consisted of different concentrations of Sky Gel(0, 52g 4m-2 (4%) , 104 g4m-2  (8%) and156 g4m-2 (12%) ) and control which were imposed in soil before sowing . The crop was managed according to the recommended conventional agronomical practices. The studied characteristics including plant height, root length; stem weight, root shoot ratio, number of grain per spike, 100 grain weight, grain yield and water use efficiency. Results revealed that growth characteristics of wheat (vegetative growth and yield) were significantly improved (p< 0.05) with increasing amount of Sky Gel concentration .The soil application of hydrogel Sky Gel 12% recorded maximum plant height 87.33cm, root length 24.58cm, root shoot ratio 28.15, number of grain per spike 51.93, 100 grain weight 4.11 g, grain yield 4.83 ton ha-1and water use efficiency 1.516 Kg m-3 compared to control treatment. The application of Sky Gel elongates irrigation frequencies and in turn decreases the depth of irrigation water needed to 818.5 mm .In light of above findings, it is concluded that the soil application of hydrogel Sky Gel is more effective in improving growth parameters, water use efficiency andincreasing yield potential . The application of Sky Gel elongates irrigation frequencies and in turn decreases the quantities of irrigation water needed.
